About Algae
Last Updated: 11/19/2012
There are three main types of algae you may find in your pool over the course of the swim season.  The Pool Guy Store sells chemicals that can help you eliminate each of these algaes efficiently.
  • Green Algae appears as slimy green growths This algae enters your pool through spores floating through the air and rain. - Green algae can be removed by super chlorination and brushing the afflicted areas. As the algae spores die off they leave behind a cream colored powder that can be vacuumed to waste.
  • Yellow (mustard) Algae Appears as a yellowish dust in the pool This algae enters your pool through spores floating through the air and rain. Very pervasive, it can only be killed with specifically designed algaecides such as Jacks Magic The Yellow Stuff and BioLab Banish. - This algae is very chlorine resistant.
  • Black Algae appears as black spots in the pool surface This algae actually takes root in the pool surface - Must be aggressively brushed and treated with direct chlorine application or a specifically designed algaecide such as Jacks Magic The 60 Stuff.
You can help reduce the likelihood of algae forming in your pool by adding maintenance doses of algaecide such as Jacks Magic The 60 Stuff or BioGuard AlgaeAll 60 on a weekly basis.
